UMKC’s net price for lowest-income students goes up

The University of Missouri-Kansas City earlier this year found itself in a bad place — high on a list of the priciest public universities for students from the lowest-income families.
Now, an update of the federal College Navigator website shows the challenge for UMKC has only grown.
UMKC officials say the school is taking steps to make more scholarship money available for those students, who come from households with less than $30,000 in annual income.
“We are constantly thinking: How can we make school more affordable, and what are some of the things we can do to support students more?” said Jennifer DeHaemers, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management. “I would expect to see some changes coming and for us to then continue moving forward.”
Based on 2010-2011 numbers, UMKC was among the 10 most expensive schools for the lowest-income freshmen, with an average net price of $16,798 a year. Net price is the cost of college — tuition, fees, room and board, books and other expenses — after grants and scholarships.
The list, based on College Navigator numbers, was part of a report released in May by the New America Foundation, a nonpartisan public policy institute.
The new data on College Navigator, for 2011-2012, put UMKC at $18,638. That’s up $1,840, or 11 percent.
“We had a slight increase in tuition, a 3 percent increase in housing costs, a 3 percent increase in food. And it’s not like our costs have stayed steady,” said Mel Tyler, vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management. “What hasn’t gone up (enough) is the amount of money available for scholarships.”
UMKC expects a 2-year-old program that discounts the cost of tuition for low-income students, plus new endowed scholarships, to lower its average net price. The Advantage Grant program reduces tuition for 233 Pell Grant-eligible, in-state undergraduates with at least a 2.7 GPA.
UMKC also is trying to get more students and parents filling out federal financial aid applications sooner to claim available dollars.
The rising cost of college and pressure from the Obama administration to make college more affordable has many public colleges focused on lowering the cost of attendance for their neediest students. Scholarships are a key way colleges can lower their net price.
Scholarship dollars can come out of an institution’s operating funds, or they can be designated by a private or corporate donor to go to a particular type of student based on need or merit. Ideally colleges and universities look to endow a scholarship so that it can be given in perpetuity.
The new College Navigator data show that the average university-awarded grant and scholarship amounts given to the lowest-income freshmen are heftier at the other schools in the University of Missouri System — the University of Missouri in Columbia, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla.

Apple Touch ID fingerprint tech 'broken', hackers say

Germany's Chaos Computer Club claims it "successfully bypassed the biometric security of Apple's Touch ID using easy everyday means".
By photographing a fingerprint left on a glass surface and creating a fake finger they were able to unlock the phone, the hackers claim.
But Apple maintains Touch ID is secure.
On its website the iPhone maker says there is a one in 50,000 chance of two separate fingerprints being alike and the technology provides "a very high level of security".
Karsten Nohl, chief scientist at SRLabs, a German hacking think tank, told the BBC: "It would have been incredible if Apple had managed to do something the rest of the biometrics industry has failed to achieve after decades of trying, so I'm not surprised it was hacked after just one day.
"Claiming this system offers a high level of security is just ridiculous," he added.
Convenience Apple does not suggest that Touch ID is a total replacement for traditional passcode security, simply a more convenient way of unlocking the phone.
"Touch ID is designed to minimise the input of your passcode; but your passcode will be needed for additional security validation," Apple says.
But it does not address the ability of hackers lifting individual prints and creating fake fingers, as the Chaos Computer Club claims to have done.
Mr Nohl says a five-digit password would be more secure than a fingerprint and believes Apple should have focused on convenience rather than security in its marketing of the Touch ID feature.
On Friday, an influential US senator called for Apple to answer "substantial privacy questions" arising from the technology.

WWE Battleground 2013: Full Card Predictions After Night of Champions

WWE follows an underwhelming Night of Champions pay-per-view with the inaugural Battleground event which will feature continuations and repeats. While bringing back a War Games-type match would have been ideal here, it doesn't appear that the company is heading in that direction.
Had The Shield and Big Show interferred in the WWE Championship match, seeing a team versus team main event would have been probable.
Instead, it appears that fans will be treated to a number of Night of Champions rematches. Some stories appear to be just beginning, while other stories are not yet over.
With the short build between pay-per-views, expect WWE to sing many of the same tunes fans heard on Sept. 15.

16 skulls found on streets in Prague

PRAGUE (AP) -- Police in Prague say 15 human skulls have been found in a wooden box found on a street, and another was found in a garbage bin.
Spokeswoman Jana Roesslerova says police found the 15 skulls Thursday morning near a garbage container after they were alerted by a telephone caller. Roesslerova says each skull was numbered.
She says another skull, also bearing a number, was found in a garbage bin Wednesday by a homeless person.
Police say it is not clear whether the two cases are connected. They have asked experts to help in their investigation.

Dead shark found on New York subway train

Commuters on board a New York subway noticed something fishy on their early morning train journey - a dead shark.
The one-and-a-half-foot long stowaway was spotted on the floor under a row of seats on a Queens-bound train around midnight.
The creature weighed between five to 10 pounds and was still wet with blood around its mouth, according to witnesses.
Passengers took photographs of the unusual find before the conductor evacuated the carriage. The train then continued to the end of the line where the shark was disposed of by a supervisor.
One commuter, identified as Mary M, told gothamist.com: "I board a car that's not terribly full and as soon as I enter, a stench hits my nose. It's not the typical urine/trash smell, it's...fishy?
"I look down to the end of the car to see a dead shark on the floor. I think I stood there for a good minute just staring, thinking 'Is this for real?!
"One of my fellow passengers remarked 'I've been riding the subway for 15 years, and this is the weirdest thing I've seen. And I've seen EVERYTHING.'"
Fellow commuter Juan Cano told CNN: "I thought it was just a plush toy or a prank. When I saw the teeth that's I knew it was real, it was no toy."
Snaps of the bizarre incident have gone viral, including one showing the shark with a cigarette in its mouth, clutching a fare card and an energy drink.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority have been unable to identify where the shark came from.
Some people have speculated that the appearance of sharks in mysterious places is a publicity stunt for the Discovery Channel's "Shark Week."
Photos of the two mysterious sharks have exploded on social media using the hashtag #sharkweek.
However the Discovery Channel denies any involvement.
Spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg told CNN: "Shark Week is all about conservation, so it deeply saddens us that someone would think that this was funny or in any way connected to our celebration of sharks."

Man finds maggots on sandwich at Atlanta airport

ATLANTA (AP) -- A restaurant says it has switched vendors after a customer found a cluster of maggots on his sandwich at Atlanta's airport.
Weekly traveler Joel Woloshuk told WSB-TV Tuesday (http://bit.ly/1895s6l ) that he bought a sandwich from Café Intermezzo and realized the white specks on top of it were maggots -- not parmesan -- when they began moving.
In a statement to WSB-TV, Café Intermezzo's president said the case was isolated and the problem could not have originated at the restaurant. He says the restaurant switched bread vendors and "not a single crumb" from the original bakery remains.
Atlanta Department of Aviation officials say they're distributing ultraviolet lights to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport restaurants so they can better inspect food shipments.
The Clayton County Board of Health says it found no citable violation at the location that it inspected.

'Frankenfish' hooked in Virginia a world record

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia man who caught a fish known as "Frankenfish" has set a world record.
Caleb Newton hooked the 17-pound, 6-ounce northern snakehead in a creek in northern Virginia during a fishing tournament June 1. The "Frankenfish" gets its nickname because of its appearance and adaptability. The invasive species native to Asia is able to breathe air and survive in very shallow waters or mud.
The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/140IvhG) reports the International Game Fish Association confirmed the record catch. It beat a snakehead caught in Japan in 2004 by 2 ounces.
Newton is a 27-year-old plumber in Spotsylvania County. He has said it only took him about a minute to get it into the boat, and the 3-foot long fish barely fit into his cooler.
